Job Title: Riley Institute Marketing & Communication Manager Job Family: Professionals Full-Time/Part-Time: Full time Compensation Grade: 5S Pay Type: Salary Department: Riley Institute Admin Job Summary: To effectively and strategically inform multiple audiences about the work of the Riley Institute; to manage Riley Institute’s general marketing and communications activities, using print, digital, web, email, social media, video and other media and vehicles; to manage Riley Institute general collateral production; to manage media relations; to oversee and implement the Riley Institute social media program; to serve as primary manager and content administrator for the Riley Institute website; to support promotion of Riley Institute events; to support promotion of Riley Institute centers for Education Policy and Leadership, Diversity Strategies, and Critical Issues.
This is a full-time, exempt position. The Riley Institute, affiliated with Furman’s Department of Politics and International Affairs, works with issues of public education and diversity throughout South Carolina and brings speakers and scholars to campus and the state to broaden student and the public’s perspectives on issues critical to the state’s progress.
Job Description: Responsibilities Manages general Riley Institute informational and promotional activities: Works closely with Riley Institute executive director and deputy director to define target audiences and create communications strategies. Works closely with Riley Institute deputy director on development of signature identity and collateral standards and materials.
Writes web, social media, email, brochure, news releases, PowerPoint and other copy and selects accompanying images; creates some simple materials in house Serves as Riley Institute liaison to Furman University Communications team on media relations, website management and maintenance, and creation of print and digital collateral for all general informational and promotional activities. Serves as Riley Institute liaison to Furman University photographer; maintains Riley Institute photography files.
Oversees Riley Institute social media program; works with Institute staff to develop strategic plan using existing and new platforms, including Facebook (currently 1350 followers), Twitter (2500 followers) Instagram (550 followers), LinkedIn, etc. ; communicates regularly with all program staff to develop content; publishes and posts regularly; tracks outcomes and grows program.
Designs, develops content for, maintains and updates Riley Institute WordPress website, comprising multiple sub-sites, photo galleries, interactive features, cross-linkages through tags, forms, etc. ); ensures Riley Institute staff with WordPress content authoring permissions are trained in use and best practices; monitors and edits website weekly and sometimes daily as often to keep site current.
Manages Riley Institute email marketing. Manages and monitors Institute-wide usage of the multiple Riley Institute logos, brand, and color palette.
Maintains copyrights and ownership of URLs. Supports Director of Center for Critical Issues (DCCI) in promotion of Riley Institute events: Helps develop marketing plans for events Works closely with Riley Institute business manager and DCCI to support their production of event-related marketing collateral; provides copy, images and other necessary design elements.
Assists program managers and staff with production of outreach materials and collateral associated with Center for Diversity Strategies, Center for Education Policy and Leadership and Center for Critical Issues. Serves as a member of the Riley Institute events team: Attends and supports all Riley Institute events Manages media relations at event sites Completes performance review process with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and how they fit into the department and university goals.
Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information; including maintaining up to date information about the department and university. Performs other duties as assigned.
Relationships Works with Riley Institute executive director, deputy director and staff; other university staff; members of the public. Responsibility for Final Decisions Responsible for own work.
May assist or instruct others doing similar work; including student workers. Tasks involve multiple procedures with interrelated processes or steps.
Work involves choosing the appropriate option or procedure to follow and applying established rules and procedures. Errors may be detected within the department or section in which they occur, but may affect the work of others within the unit to trace errors and make corrections.
Education/Skill Requirements: Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years relevant experience; preferred fields of study include but are not limited to English, journalism, communications, political science, and sociology Experience developing multi-prong plans to communicate to a variety of audiences for multiple informational or promotional purposes Strong writer and editor for multiple media and vehicles Ability to synthesize information around complex topics Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment Ability to take initiative and work independently Must possess the ability and desire to work effectively in a team environment Software/Technology Requirements: Experience with multiple social media platforms and their use in enterprise communications Experience with WordPress and its use in enterprise communications Experience with EventBrite Experience with MailChimp or Constant Contact email marketing programs Experience in Office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint Some design skills and some experience in Photoshop and InDesign a plus Work Conditions Work is performed under usual office conditions. Work includes occasional travel within the state.
