VP, Strategy, Pricing and Analytics – The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) – MD, USA

Summary of the Position

The VP Strategy, Pricing & Analytics is a highly visible role responsible for leading the Executive and Global Leadership Teams in the collaborative development of USP’s overall strategy. This individual ensures the organization has used fact-based analysis to set, communicate, and make the choices essential to achieving its mission priorities. In direct collaboration with the CEO and ET, he or she helps identify, establish and refresh the logical basis for the central strategic choices facing the organization around issues of organizational public health impact, and sustainability (revenue and cost).

In addition to support of these activities, s/he will lead a team of analysts and strategists, the broader Strategy division, and key leadership to support the application of USP’s Strategy to specific program units, regions and other performance cells. S/he will manage a team of strategist responsible for furthering the overall enterprise strategy and analytics agenda, including oversight and management of external strategy engagements across the organization. Initiate with his/her team to conduct “deep dive projects” with performance cells in areas of high strategic priority. S/he will also lead the Revenue Strategy & Pricing function, responsible for setting overall pricing strategy as well as maintaining strategic pricing position on all of USP’s products and defining the organization’s strategy for its donation and discounting activity to maximize its public health impact. Finally, this role includes responsibility and accountability for USP’s data strategy and analytics function, which collaborates across the organization to set the overall vision for data use and integration, as well as developing both the operational and strategic analytical capabilities essential for successful decision making within the organization.

This individual will be expected to work in close collaboration with the CEO, as well as other members of the executive team. Work will be done in collaboration with highest levels in the organization and involve working directly with senior leaders across multiple functions and programs in support of the Enterprise’s goals, strategies and plans, and, ultimately, the successful execution of those plans. This role is a critical voice in the organization – one of the most senior leaders of the division and a mentor and/or manager to all strategic staff across the organization

Roles and Responsibilities

• Lead a specialized and senior team of professionals responsible for effective processes for identifying, framing, and analyzing the highest priority challenges facing the organization as it seeks to achieve its mission and strategy
• Develop and continuously strengthen both long term and annual strategic positions for the organization, in consultation with the CEO and SVP of Strategy, full Executive Team, and leaders of major program, site and operational functions
• Build and maintain a solid basis of analytical insights around USP’s impact, revenue and costs to support a fact-based dialogue on these issues across the organization
• Continuously strengthen USP’s pricing capabilities and the competitiveness of its pricing position
• Ensure rigorous and high-quality research, analysis, and synthesis of major strategic issues facing the Enterprise (competitive position, strategic advantages and weaknesses, growth opportunities and threats, operational and organization alignment to achieve these goals, etc.)
• Facilitate alignment of leadership (ET and GLT) around priorities and critical actions for the organization to take to achieve its Strategy
• Partner with the Strategy- Insight, Strategy- Portfolio Management and Strategy- New Ventures leadership to “force multiply” overall strategic activity and the impact on the division on strategic direction of the organization
• Build and strengthen a team of high performing analysts and strategists who work effectively across the organization
• Inspire high performing staff across the organization with strategic vision and collaborative opportunities
• Develop and ensure effective uptake of communications about the overall Enterprise Strategy, so that it is embedded in decisions about program, site, and division strategies and provides a source of direction in overall decision making within the organization

Basic Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field required or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Three (3) years of experience working in a top tier strategic consulting firm, including leading multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ten (10) years of progressive professional level work experience in a comparable organization
• Three (3) years experience successfully managing teams across a variety of initiatives
• Two (2) years experience working in health care, sciences, not for profit or public sector

• Executive (C-suite) level communications and facilitation
• Highly effective interpersonal and collaborative style, including an ability to work highly effectively within a matrix organization, with quality engagement and thought partnership across the org (PUTs, sites, R&I) and with all executive levels.
• A strong, values-driven and inspiring manager who is able to assess, attract and develop talent.
• Mastery of management consulting fundamentals including: problem definition and scoping, problem solving, insight gathering, research/benchmarking and analytics
• Strong understanding of business process improvement, project management, business requirement gathering techniques and change management approaches and principles
• Ability to work highly effectively within a matrix organization, with quality engagement and thought partnership across the org (PUTs, sites, R&I) and with all executive levels.
• Ability to rapidly develop understanding, structure, analyze, synthesize, and communicate on novel and complex topics
• Ability to deliver significant business results that reflects strategic and creative thinking, problem solving, individual initiative
• Demonstrated ability to effectively plan and facilitate meetings and workgroups
• Viewed as a credible thought partner and expert in his/her field
• Ability to clearly communicate business solutions and the value of those solutions to the client; both in written executive summary form and through platform presentations
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Comfortable with ambiguity
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft software
