Director, Diabetes Education & Technology Services


The Joslin Diabetes Center provides care for more than 20,000 patients annually. More than 15 Diabetes Educators work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary care model to provide diabetes care and education.  A number of unique education and treatment programs are also offered to patients.  These include group programs, a pregnancy program, a program for the elderly with diabetes, programs for patients using advanced diabetes technologies, and culturally-specific programs (Latinx, Asian American). The Joslin Education Section is responsible for ensuring evidence-based clinical care, policies, and procedures for all diabetes education at Joslin.

The Director of Diabetes Education and Technology Services is expected to provide exceptional clinical, and administrative leadership and to promote professional development of the faculty in the Section.  Responsible for the recruitment, training, development, and retention of educator staff.

This person will work closely and collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer and other Section Chiefs to help develop and implement a strategic plan for the Section to further enhance the excellence of the Section.  The ultimate goal is to ensure that Joslin remains an innovative leader in diabetes health care delivery at both the institution and through partnerships with other provider organizations.  


1. Leadership and Management

A. Provide overall leadership for education services within the Clinic (including satellites).
• Plans and directs the activities of all assigned department personnel, including nursing, nutrition and exercise physiology staff.
• Works with Clinical Manager of Diabetes Education to manage day-to-day clinical activities
• Responsible for the recruitment, training, development, and retention of educators
B. Promotes professional growth and development of Education staff
• Promotes professional development of diabetes educators with regards to core skills and competencies, including writing and presentation skills
• Conducts annual performance evaluations in collaboration with the Clinical Manager, Diabetes Education for diabetes educators in nutrition, nursing, and exercise physiology.
• Monitors and facilitates maintenance of education staff qualifications (CEU’s, licensure, registrations and competency).
C. Prepares annual budget for Education Section and responsible for operational excellence and performance to budget

2. Education and Technology Services

A. Oversees program development including the planning, implementation and evaluation of the clinic education and technology services and programs.
• Works with Chief Medical Officer to identify new areas of clinical translation and innovation to remain a national leader in diabetes education Oversees diabetes education program development for target populations.
B. Collaborates and works with the Research Division and Global Education and Care Advisory (GEC) with the Visitor Education and Training program for allied health professionals and medical foreign visitors. Work collaboratively with other Section Chiefs to ensure appropriate clinical care of patients and to help foster new and innovative approaches to multidisciplinary care.
C. Supports collaborations with colleagues across Joslin to ensure the design and implementation of high-quality, evidence-based education activities.

3. Maintains clinical licensure and limited clinical practice in area of expertise

4. Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement

A. Oversees the ADA Education Recognized Program for Joslin Clinic. Collaborates with the Clinical Manager, Diabetes Education for maintaining ADA Recognition and participating in the evaluation of the effectiveness of education services.
B. Maintains the Clinic’s Performance Improvement plan to assure the delivery of educational services at an exceptional level of achievement and quality.
• Participates in the preparation and monitoring of audits as part of the quality improvement program.
• Works with clinic administration to develop, operationalize, and review on an annual basis the quality improvement/assurance system for diabetes education.
• Participates in the Clinic Quality Committee and contributes to the Patient Care Assessment Committee report to the Mass Medical Board biannually.


  • A graduate of a Master program or advanced training degree in an appropriate academic discipline including management courses or extensive management experience.
  • A minimum of five years progressive experience in a health care delivery environment focusing on education of patients, including at least two years of management of such services.
  • Appropriate discipline licensure. i.e. Mass Nursing, MSN-NP, Physician Assistant ( PA), Dietitian/Nutritionist or other professional organization
  • Discipline specific
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)
  • BLS preferred (if involved in patient care)
  • Possess a focus in diabetes education and be prepared to identify and implement modern educational approaches.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to interact with peers and staff to ensure accountability in clinical and scholarly activities, including professional development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiscal and operational administrative responsibilities ensuring accountability in achieving financial goals and volume. .
  • Effective communication and problem-solving skills are needed to share information and influence other Section heads and internal/external colleagues as well as to mentor and develop Education staff and other trainees.
  • Articulate both verbally and in writing with regard to clinical diabetes education.
